Oil on canvas by George Nemethy signed in the lower right. This exquisite diminutive work is typical of Nemethy who paints these incredibly detailed dream-like works of sailboats with full sail on the open water. His work is difficult to find as it is so collected. The best and only collection I have come across is at Wally Findlay Gallery in NYC, one of the finest galleries. This work is especially interesting because it has 2 sailboats while most have only one. The incredibly modernistic division of space with the pastel colored clouds layers is modern and yet the imagery is something we think of as traditional. Nemethy is always able to walk that fine line of dream versus reality. Both intricate and beautiful in his aesthetic he is able to create such strength, you don't expect to be completely bequiled by something so small. The color palette of this particular work is exquisite. The longer you look at it the more transfixed you become. The gilt frame shows a bit of wear but is typical of his original framing. Nemethy was born in 1952 into a family of painters from Newburgh, NY. His father was a highly regarded marine painter. He and his siblings also became painters studying under their father. He was greatly influenced, as you can see, by Persian miniature paintings. He still travels extensively. 9- 1/2" x 7- 1/2"
